What is the Point of Low-Slope Roofs?
No matter what kind of building you have, no roof should be completely flat to allow it to drain. The solution is a low-slope roof, which is nearly flat but has a slope of less than 3-in-12, so for every horizontal foot, the roof level increases less than 3 inches vertically. Even though this roof is sloped, it cannot depend on gravity to drain the water so each low-slope roof must contain a watertight membrane across the whole surface to the edge. This way, there are no pools of standing water that could cause potential problems. Low-slope roofing is most often seen in transition sections of homes.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF LOW-SLOPE ROOFS
Built-Up Roofs: This type of low-slope roofing has a long history of outstanding performance. With this type of roofing, multiple layers of roofing felt are secured in place with hot asphalt or coal-tar pitch. This helps to “build-up” a membrane that is watertight, hence the name. However, keep in mind this roofing type may have some environmental concerns and crude oil prices may make it more costly.
Modified Bitumen: A modified bitumen type of low-slope roofing is definitely one of most favored roofing types. The construction used for roofing type allows it to have superior flexibility and strength. Modified bitumen roofs have a record of excellent performance, especially due to its exceptional waterproofing. Single Ply: Single ply roofs are built in a factory in a certain way so they can be installed as a single ply, making them more environmentally friendly.
