What is the Point of Low-Slope Roofs?
No matter what kind of building you have, no roof should be completely flat to allow it to drain. The solution is a low-slope roof, which is nearly flat but has a slope of less than 3-in-12, so for every horizontal foot, the roof level increases less than 3 inches vertically. Even though this roof is sloped, it cannot depend on gravity to drain the water so each low-slope roof must contain a watertight membrane across the whole surface to the edge. This way, there are no pools of standing water that could cause potential problems. Low-slope roofing is most often seen in transition sections of homes.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF LOW-SLOPE ROOFS
Built-Up Roofs: This type of low-slope roofing has a long history of outstanding performance. With this type of roofing, multiple layers of roofing felt are secured in place with hot asphalt or coal-tar pitch. This helps to “build-up” a membrane that is watertight, hence the name. However, keep in mind this roofing type may have some environmental concerns and crude oil prices may make it more costly.
Modified Bitumen: A modified bitumen type of low-slope roofing is definitely one of most favored roofing types. The construction used for roofing type allows it to have superior flexibility and strength. Modified bitumen roofs have a record of excellent performance, especially due to its exceptional waterproofing. When you choose this roofing type, you have a wide choice of application methods and top-surfacing.
Single Ply: Single ply roofs are built in a factory in a certain way so they can be installed as a single ply, making them more environmentally friendly. A major benefit of this type of roof is that they are usually white so they reflect heat and are energy efficient. Since single ply roofs are already manufactured together, the roof seams are extremely durable and have remarkable waterproofing abilities.
Structural Metal Panel Systems : There are two type of metal panel systems: structural and architectural. Structural metal panel systems are used for low-slope roofs because they are known for their strength and water-resistant properties. If you have a building that has large gaps between structural supports, this roofing type is ideal for you. It is typically seen in large factory buildings and is mechanically attached to roof support structures.
